After 18 Months of Beta Testing Facebook Express Wifi Service Started using 700 Hotspots across Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Meghalaya.
According to Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Facebook) “There are a billion people in India who do not have access to the Internet yet and if you care about connecting everyone in the world, you can’t do that if there are so many people who don’t even have access to basic connectivity “.
The recent attempt of the facebook was by providing free basics, it was a service by giving free Internet which was users could browse few sites (News, health, travel, sports, etc) known as internet.org. But TRAI stopped the service because of violating net neutrality.
Facebook Partner with 500 local shops to sell the services through vouchers price ranging from 10-20 per day. Express wifi offers fast Internet connection with lesser cost and the main aim of the service is to give internet services to those areas that do not have Internet connectivity.
The Express wifi offers 10Mbps speed without daily limit, The user does not need to use Facebook App or any other Facebook service in order to use the Wifi, Users also can purchase the plans through online and those who can’t use online payments can simply purchase the voucher from the nearby local shops where the wifi services are available.
Facebook also partnered with Bharathi Airtel and expanding the Express Wifi services which adds another 20,000 Wifi Hotspots.
The main challenge is the lack of infrastructures to connect to villages, Wifi has a limit to reach, so it remains the major challenge for providing the Internet to everyone. with a similar intention, Google is providing the Free wifi service throughout the country Railway stations.
